Bumper Repair – What are the Options?

OK, so you’ve reversed into that bollard in the car park again but this time you didn’t get away with it and the deep scuff marks mean that a bumper repair is necessary. What are your options?
1. Do nothing – There’s no structural damage and the functionality of the car isn’t compromised and, hey, you can’t even see it when you’re sat in the driver’s seat. Also, not repairing it means it costs you nothing, right? When you come to sell the car, the damage will lower its resale value. If you are leasing the car, the hire company will hit you with a large bill when you return it. Finally, the damage is likely to increase over time as the elements work their way into the scratches and scuffs, making a bumper repair more expensive later on.
2. Replace the bumper – Will certainly fix the issue but has several disadvantages: the expense of a new bumper along with the extra cost of repainting it to match your vehicle and the labour involved in fitting it can be huge, ordering and fitting a new bumper can take several days which leaves you without a vehicle.
3. Repair the bumper – Bumper repair has several advantages: it is more cost effective than a replacement and much quicker while still preserving the value of your car, a mobile smart repair company can come to you directly and fix the car there and then. One more advantage is the fact that it is more environmentally friendly to repair rather than replace the bumper
In summary, bumper repair is the most cost effective and easiest way of dealing with a damaged bumper. Even better is the ability to utilise the services of a mobile smart repair company.

What is the Cost of a Bumper Repair?

The first thought that comes to most people’s minds when a bumper repair is contemplated is: how much will it cost? The first thing to consider is how much it will cost NOT to get the bumper repair completed. It will cost you on the resale value of the car, or if you have a lease car it will cost you when you return the vehicle in the form of a large charge on your bill from the lease company. That said, what is the actual cost you are looking at for a bumper repair?

Factors to consider

All bumper repairs are different. The price for a complete replacement bumper, repainted to match your existing colour, could be around £300 from a traditional car body shop. Repairing the bumper is usually much more cost effective.

The price for the repair depends on the size of the damage, the position of the repair (on the corner or on a crease line?), whether dent removal or filling is required and other factors. As a general guide, a repair carried out to damage to an area of around 10” with deep scuff marks ad a medium size dent would cost around £100-£150 for a complete, invisible repair from a mobile smart repair company.

If there is more than one area of damage on the car, discounts are usually given as the repairer is already in place so travelling time can be discounted.

What is the process?

Most bumper repairs follow the same general process: sand the damaged area, fix or fill any dents, spray primer on the area, two coats of paint, two coats of lacquer and a little blending spray to make the repair invisible. Finally a quick, gentle polish and the repair is complete.

This is only a rough guide to the process and the pricing of repairs as it is impossible to give an exact cost without seeing the damage. In summary though, a bumper repair is much more economical than a total replacement and a mobile smart repair company would be able to give you discounts on further damage.

How to Repair a Scuff on a Bumper

All drivers know that awful moment when they hear the dreaded scraping sounds as your car bumper rubs roughly up against something it shouldn't. You stop the car and get out to be faced with a site like this:

After the obligatory cursing, you are faced with a choice; insurance claim that will likely cost you a couple of hundred pound excess, or a car body shop that will charge you £180 for a bumper and another £150 to paint it the right colour!

There is now a third option - call out your local mobile smart repair company who will come out and see you and quote for free and would charge somewhere in the region of £100 to £150 in total to repair that damage and restore the bumper to an "as new" appearance.

MobileSmartRepair.com offers such services as bumper repair manchester and bumper repair wrexham and would visit you at your home or at work and fix the damage for you within 2-3 hours. The process for the bumper smart repair is outlined below:

1. Prep the area - clean and lightly scuff the area that is to be repaired and a small area around it.
2. Rough mask the area to be worked on to minimise the risk of causing further damage.
3. Use a dual action sander to smooth away the damage and feather the edges of the repair to avoid leaving hard lines after painting.
4. Use a suitable filler if necessary and then sand it smooth with a high grade wet and dry sandpaper.
5. Mask the area and spray a deep filling, quality primer taking care to only paint the area of damage.
6. Wet sand the primer after drying with a heat gun to remove any hard edges.
7. Mix your paint using one of the smart mix systems such as Standox and apply two even coats (Applying a third "drop coat" if the paint is metallic). Dry between each coat with a heat gun.
8. Mix the lacquer with a hardener and spray on two coats - a slightly dryer coat first and then a full wet coat to finish.
9. Spray a small amount of "smart blend" to the edges of the repair to blend the new lacquer into the old.
10. Dry the lacquer with infra red heaters for around 20 minutes to cure and harden the finish.
11. Lightly polish and stand back to admire your handiwork :)
