How to Repair a Scuff on a Bumper

All drivers know that awful moment when they hear the dreaded scraping sounds as your car bumper rubs roughly up against something it shouldn't. You stop the car and get out to be faced with a site like this:

After the obligatory cursing, you are faced with a choice; insurance claim that will likely cost you a couple of hundred pound excess, or a car body shop that will charge you £180 for a bumper and another £150 to paint it the right colour!

There is now a third option - call out your local mobile smart repair company who will come out and see you and quote for free and would charge somewhere in the region of £100 to £150 in total to repair that damage and restore the bumper to an "as new" appearance.

MobileSmartRepair.com offers such services as bumper repair manchester and bumper repair wrexham and would visit you at your home or at work and fix the damage for you within 2-3 hours. The process for the bumper smart repair is outlined below:

1. Prep the area - clean and lightly scuff the area that is to be repaired and a small area around it.
2. Rough mask the area to be worked on to minimise the risk of causing further damage.
3. Use a dual action sander to smooth away the damage and feather the edges of the repair to avoid leaving hard lines after painting.
4. Use a suitable filler if necessary and then sand it smooth with a high grade wet and dry sandpaper.
5. Mask the area and spray a deep filling, quality primer taking care to only paint the area of damage.
6. Wet sand the primer after drying with a heat gun to remove any hard edges.
7. Mix your paint using one of the smart mix systems such as Standox and apply two even coats (Applying a third "drop coat" if the paint is metallic). Dry between each coat with a heat gun.
8. Mix the lacquer with a hardener and spray on two coats - a slightly dryer coat first and then a full wet coat to finish.
9. Spray a small amount of "smart blend" to the edges of the repair to blend the new lacquer into the old.
10. Dry the lacquer with infra red heaters for around 20 minutes to cure and harden the finish.
11. Lightly polish and stand back to admire your handiwork :)

  2. This happened to me last week and I was hoping to avoid a trip to a mechanic so I'm going to give this a go and repair it myself and hopefully it will all work out. Thanks so much!
